Demand for Accountability and Justice in Tigray region, Ethiopia

The record of governance by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) must be subjected to serious and uncompromising scrutiny. It is no longer sufficient to rely on historical narratives of liberation while ignoring persistent and credible concerns about authoritarian practices, lack of accountability, and the suffering experienced by civilians in Tigray.

Critics—including members of the Tigrayan community, independent analysts, and diaspora voices—have repeatedly raised concerns that political power under the TPLF has been concentrated in the hands of a limited elite, with insufficient transparency and limited tolerance for dissent. These concerns point to a pattern in which political control has, at times, taken precedence over democratic participation and the rights of ordinary citizens.

The outbreak and continuation of the Tigray conflict in 2020 marked a devastating turning point. Investigations and findings by bodies such as the United Nations and Amnesty International have documented grave human rights violations by multiple parties. These include killings of civilians, widespread sexual violence, forced displacement, and obstruction of humanitarian assistance. These are not abstract allegations—they reflect the lived reality of countless victims.

While responsibility for these crimes is shared among different actors, it is critical to state clearly: leadership decisions matter. The role of the TPLF in political and military escalation, mobilization strategies, and governance during the conflict must be investigated transparently and without political protection. No group can claim legitimacy while avoiding accountability for decisions that may have contributed to widespread civilian suffering.

There are also deeply concerning allegations—circulating among affected communities and observers—regarding forced recruitment, the pressure placed on civilians to support armed efforts, and governance failures that may have intensified humanitarian crises. These claims demand independent verification, but they cannot simply be dismissed or ignored. Silence and denial only deepen mistrust.

The consequences for the people of Tigray have been catastrophic: repeated displacement, severe hunger, psychological trauma, and the breakdown of basic services. Civilians have paid the price for political and military decisions over which they had little or no control.

Equally alarming is the continued absence of meaningful accountability. Despite repeated calls from the international community, there has been no comprehensive, credible process that ensures justice for victims. This lack of accountability—whether at the regional, national, or international level—sends a dangerous message that grave abuses can occur without consequence.

This must change.

There must be:

  • independent, impartial investigations into all alleged violations by all parties, including the TPLF leadership,
  • real accountability mechanisms that lead to consequences, not symbolic gestures,
  • protection of fundamental freedoms, including the right to dissent within Tigray,
  • and a political process that genuinely reflects the will and rights of the people—not the preservation of power.

The people of Tigray are not instruments of any political organization. Their suffering cannot be minimized, justified, or politicized. Any authority that claims to represent them must be held to the highest standard of responsibility.

Without truth, accountability, and justice, there can be no lasting peace.
