Diplomatic Statement on the Protection of the Human Rights of Habesha Agaezi Women

A Call for Dignity, Accountability, Justice, Reparation, and Guarantees of Non-Recurrence

The Agaezi Women Association (AWA), affiliated with the Agaezi National Union (ANU), issues this statement in reaffirmation of its commitment to the protection and promotion of the human rights, dignity, equality, and security of all Habesha Agaezi women.

The Association recognizes that the protection of women from discrimination, violence, and other human rights violations is a fundamental obligation under international human rights law and an indispensable condition for sustainable peace, justice, democratic governance, and reconciliation.

The Agaezi Women Association expresses profound concern regarding reports and testimonies of serious violations of the rights of Habesha Agaezi women. These allegations include acts that amount to serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.

The Association therefore respectfully calls upon national authorities, regional institutions, the African Union, the United Nations, diplomatic partners, humanitarian organizations, civil society, and international accountability mechanisms to take all appropriate measures consistent with international law to ensure truth, justice, protection of victims, and institutional reform.

I. Restoration of the Dignity and Equal Rights of Habesha Agaezi Women

The dignity of every woman is inherent, universal, and non-derogable.

The Agaezi Women Association calls for immediate measures to restore and safeguard the dignity, equality, security, and full participation of Habesha Agaezi women in every sphere of public and private life.

We urge all competent authorities to:

Uphold the principles of equality before the law and non-discrimination.
Prevent all forms of gender-based violence and harmful practices.
Ensure equal access to education, healthcare, justice, employment, political participation, and economic opportunity.
Protect women human rights defenders and community leaders from intimidation, harassment, and reprisals.
Promote policies that recognize the equal worth and leadership of women in society.

These measures are consistent with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol).

II. Truth, Independent Investigation, and Accountability

Justice requires impartiality, transparency, and respect for due process.

The Association calls for independent, impartial, credible, and transparent investigations into all credible allegations concerning crimes, abuses, and violations committed against Habesha Agaezi women.

Where sufficient admissible evidence exists, individuals responsible should be investigated and, where appropriate, prosecuted in accordance with applicable national and international law while fully respecting internationally recognized fair trial guarantees.

The Association further calls for:

Preservation of evidence.
Protection of victims, witnesses, and human rights defenders.
Independent documentation of alleged violations.
Cooperation with national, regional, and international human rights mechanisms.
Measures to prevent impunity and strengthen the rule of law.

Accountability serves not only victims but also society by reinforcing public confidence in justice and contributing to sustainable reconciliation.

III. Effective Remedy, Reparation, and Compensation

International human rights law recognizes the right of victims of serious human rights violations to an effective remedy.

The Agaezi Women Association therefore calls for comprehensive victim-centred reparation programmes consistent with the United Nations Basic Principles and Guidelines on the Right to a Remedy and Reparation (2005).

Such programmes should include, where appropriate:

Restitution;
Fair and adequate financial compensation;
Physical and psychological rehabilitation;
Legal assistance and access to justice;
Social and economic reintegration;
Educational and livelihood support;
Satisfaction measures, including official acknowledgement of harm where appropriate;
Institutional reforms designed to prevent recurrence.

Reparations should be accessible, equitable, gender-sensitive, and responsive to the needs of survivors.

IV. Guarantees of Non-Recurrence

The Association urges the adoption of structural reforms aimed at preventing future violations.

These measures should include:

Strengthening independent judicial institutions;
Ensuring accountability within public institutions;
Human rights education;
Women’s equal participation in governance and peacebuilding;
Legal reforms consistent with international human rights obligations;
Protection mechanisms for vulnerable communities.

Sustainable peace cannot exist without justice, and justice cannot endure without accountability.

Appeal to the International Community

The Agaezi Women Association respectfully calls upon:

The United Nations and its relevant human rights mechanisms;
The African Union;
The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights;
Diplomatic missions and international partners;
Humanitarian organizations;
International and regional civil society organizations;
Independent media and human rights defenders;

to support lawful efforts aimed at protecting the rights and dignity of Habesha Agaezi women through peaceful, rights-based, and internationally recognized mechanisms.

The Agaezi Women Association remains firmly committed to peaceful advocacy, democratic engagement, dialogue, reconciliation, and the rule of law.

We believe that justice must never be selective, human dignity must never be compromised, and every woman—without distinction—is entitled to equality, security, and the full protection of the law.

Our advocacy is guided by the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, CEDAW, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the Maputo Protocol.

The restoration of dignity, accountability for proven violations, effective remedies for victims, and guarantees of non-repetition are indispensable foundations for lasting peace, reconciliation, and sustainable development.
