The “Triangular War” (Asmera, Mekelle and Addis Ababa): ANU Press Release

Agaezi National Union (ANU) – Executive Summary

Date: 07 November 2025
Subject: Urgent Report on Military Attack in Raya, Agaezi, Ethiopia and Risks of Renewed Conflict

Summary of the Situation

The Agaezi National Union (ANU) alerts the international community to a serious escalation in the northern Ethiopian highlands.
Credible local sources confirm that the Ethiopian Air Force, under the Prosperity Party government of Abiy Ahmed Ali, carried out a drone strike targeting TPLF forces in Tonsa, Raya–Agaezi, near the Afar border.
The assault caused multiple casualties and represents a potential violation of the 2022 Pretoria Peace Agreement, threatening renewed conflict across the region.

The “Triangular War” (Asmera, Mekelle and Addis Ababa)

The Horn of Africa faces a volatile three-way dynamic:

  • Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Federal Government) vs. TPLF factions in Tigray (Mekelle)

  • Eritrea (Asmara) vs. Tigray, and

  • Ethiopia vs. Eritrea over border and Red Sea access disputes.

Tensions are rising as Eritrean forces mobilize, Ethiopian troops concentrate near borders, and TPLF internal divisions deepen.
The exclusion of Eritrea from the Pretoria Agreement, alongside parallel crises in Sudan and Somalia, has amplified instability across the Horn.

Impact on the Habesha Agaezi / Geʽez-Heritage Community

The Habesha Agaezi Ethiopians — heirs of the Geʽez civilization including Tigre, Amhara, Agew, Afar, Gurage, Harar, Gamo, and Tigrinya peoples — are facing severe humanitarian and cultural threats:

  • Damage and looting of Orthodox churches, monasteries, and heritage sites

  • Displacement and loss of livelihoods in the Geezland highlands

  • Marginalization of smaller groups (Agew, Kunama, Irob, Afar)

  • Erosion of the Geʽez language, liturgy, and inter-communal identity

The conflict endangers more than 3,000 years of shared Geʽez cultural continuity.

Clarification: Differentiating TPLF and Civilians

The TPLF is a political-military organization and does not represent the civilian population of the region.
The Habesha Agaezi civilians, including those residing in Tigray, are victims of conflict, not participants.
ANU calls on all international partners to avoid conflating political factions with the people and to protect civilians from collective punishment or political labeling.

ANU Call to Action

The Agaezi National Union (ANU) urges the United Nations, diplomatic missions, and humanitarian agencies to:

  1. Investigate the recent attack in Raya–Agaezi as a potential breach of the Pretoria Agreement.

  2. Differentiate political actors (e.g., TPLF) from the Habesha Agaezi civilian population.

  3. Protect civilians, heritage, and humanitarian corridors in the northern highlands.

  4. Support inclusive peacebuilding and cultural preservation initiatives safeguarding the Geʽez heritage of the Horn.
