The Agaezi National Union (ANU) expresses serious concern over the political independence and editorial integrity of Tigray Television (TTV). Reports and public perceptions that the station is influenced by individuals closely associated with the Sebhat Nega Tyrranical TPLF leadership have raised questions about whether it adequately serves the interests of the people of Tigray. Both these TPLF cadres (Namely, Abadi Gebreselase and Yemane Gebremikael) are servants of TPLF not the people of Tigray at all.
ANU believes that public media should belong to the people—not to any political party, military faction, or political elite. Media institutions have a responsibility to provide balanced reporting, encourage pluralism, and allow diverse political opinions to be heard without censorship or intimidation.
ANU further argues that individuals who held positions of authority during periods in which serious violations of international humanitarian law or human rights may have occurred should be subject to independent, impartial investigations. Allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, or corruption must be examined through credible judicial mechanisms that respect due process and international legal standards. Responsibility for such crimes is individual and must be determined by competent courts based on evidence.
ANU Calls For
- The depoliticization of Tigray Television and all publicly funded media institutions.
- Editorial independence and equal access for all peaceful political organizations operating in Tigray.
- Independent investigations into allegations of corruption, abuse of authority, and international crimes committed by any political or military actors, regardless of affiliation.
- The preservation of evidence relating to alleged human rights violations.
- Full cooperation with independent national and international accountability mechanisms.
- Protection of journalists, whistleblowers, and media workers from political intimidation.
- Peaceful civic engagement by the people of Tigray to advocate for transparency, accountability, democratic reform, and freedom of expression.
ANU encourages its members and supporters to pursue these objectives exclusively through peaceful, lawful, and democratic means, including public advocacy, documentation of human rights concerns, civic education, and support for independent institutions. Justice should be achieved through the rule of law rather than intimidation, retaliation, or violence.
