“The ‘Mockery’ Commission” By Moges Ejigu
The commission established by Abiy Ahmed, which members of the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (Ezema) Party praise as the “National Dialogue Commission,” is in reality what can only be described as the “Mockery Commission.” The opening session of this so-called “conference” was launched on July 15, 2025 (Hamle 8, 2018 E.C.)by its creator, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The commission is chaired by Professor Mesfin Araya, who serves as its commissioner.

What Did Mesfin Araya Say Upon Entering the Palace?
Incidentally, on the day Mesfin Araya entered the National Palace, he declared:
“Not only were we previously unable to enter the palace, but we were not even allowed to see its gate.”
From this statement, one can conclude that what had truly concerned Mesfin Araya was not peace, justice, or democracy, but rather his personal ambition and access to power.
His criticism of the previous government was not that it failed to establish peace, justice, or democracy, but rather that it did not allow him to enjoy the privileges of the palace. Intellectuals who flatter those in power admire Abiy Ahmed because he has granted them those privileges.
It is tragic to see an elderly professor, respected both for his age and academic status, reduced to serving as a messenger for a politician who reportedly never completed the seventh grade, simply because he has been granted access to power. It is equally sad that someone of such academic standing would value entry into the palace above the pursuit of peace and democracy.
One must therefore ask: What can realistically be expected from a commission led by such a person?
From “Dialogue” to “Mockery”
The body that Abiy Ahmed calls the National Dialogue Commission would more accurately be described, in the language of today’s youth, as a “Mockery Commission.” The Amharic term used by the author, “Fuggera,” implies ridicule, joking, or making fun of others.
This is why, throughout this article, the author intentionally replaces the word “dialogue” with “mockery.” According to the author, the gathering established by Abiy Ahmed is not a genuine national dialogue but a public insult directed at the Ethiopian people.
Four Years of Collecting Agendas
The commission has reportedly spent the past four years collecting agendas from the public.
According to the author, many of those invited to expensive hotels for these consultations were popular TikTok personalities rather than individuals with meaningful expertise on national affairs.
These included young people who gained attention through provocative online behavior, vulgar entertainment, and sensational content designed merely to attract viewers.
The author asks:
Is there any greater mockery than presenting such individuals as participants in a serious national dialogue?
Why Were They Selected?
According to the author, these social media influencers were selected precisely because they possess little or no knowledge of major constitutional and political issues.
This, the author argues, ensured that fundamental questions—including:
- Ethiopia’s Constitution,
- the federal system,
- state restructuring,
- and national governance
would never become genuine subjects of debate.
Instead, the government could later claim that “the Ethiopian people have discussed these issues” while controlling both the participants and the conclusions.
When critics questioned why TikTok entertainers were participating in discussions about national constitutional matters, Prosperity Party supporters responded:
“Are TikTok users not citizens? Don’t they also have the right to discuss their country’s future?”
According to the author, this response was merely political cover intended to portray the process as inclusive while avoiding meaningful discussion.
Rural Mothers as Political Shields
After four years, the commission reportedly brought illiterate rural mothers to participate in the conference.
The author argues that anyone questioning whether these women possessed sufficient knowledge to debate constitutional matters would immediately be accused of insulting ordinary Ethiopians.
Thus, according to the author, the commission shields itself from criticism by portraying every objection as contempt for the public.
The Real Objective
According to the author, the true objective is not national consultation but political legitimacy.
By gathering individuals who lack expertise in constitutional law or federal governance, the commission can later declare:
“The Ethiopian people have deliberated and reached consensus.”
Should critics respond that the participants lacked the necessary understanding of these complex issues, they are portrayed as enemies of the people.
Intellectual Cover
To create the appearance of academic credibility, the commission also includes university lecturers and PhD holders, particularly from the Ethiopian Civil Service University.
According to the author, these academics frequently appear on state broadcasters such as ETV and Fana Television, defending the commission and presenting it as inclusive and democratic.
Members of opposition parties such as Ezema and ABN (Amhara National Movement) likewise praise its inclusiveness, thereby providing additional legitimacy.
The author argues that these endorsements merely strengthen what he considers a fundamentally deceptive political process.
Absurd Agendas
One example cited by the author concerns government offices selecting representatives to attend the conference.
Instead of discussing national constitutional issues, some reportedly brought workplace grievances involving shortages of sugar, cooking oil, transportation, or administrative inefficiencies.
The author argues that these are ordinary management issues that should be solved within government institutions—not topics for a national constitutional dialogue.
A genuine national consultation, he contends, should instead focus on questions of:
- state-building,
- constitutional reform,
- institutional development,
- democracy,
- justice,
- and the future political structure of Ethiopia.
The Commission’s Political Purpose
According to the author, the commission’s principal objective is to provide public legitimacy for political decisions already desired by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
By claiming that “the people discussed and approved” these matters, the government can justify policies that strengthen its own power and advance its political agenda.
Expected Outcomes
According to the author, the outcomes expected from this “Mockery Commission” include:
- Institutionalizing legal and political measures that weaken the Amhara people and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
- Advancing the political ideology commonly referred to by critics as “Oromummaa” in Addis Ababa and throughout Ethiopia.
- Weakening the Amharic language by replacing it with other official languages.
- Transforming Ethiopia’s parliamentary political system into a presidential one.
The author concludes by arguing that this final objective would fulfill what he describes as Abiy Ahmed’s long-held personal ambition to be remembered in history not only as Prime Minister, but also as President of Ethiopia.
