FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AGAEZI NATIONAL UNION (ANU) CONDEMNS THE KILLING OF MR. BERHE TUKUYE IN ALAMATA
Date: 03 June 2026
The Agaezi National Union (ANU) has learned with profound shock and sadness of the killing of Mr. Berhe Tukuye on 25/09/2018 E.C. at approximately 4:00 PM while at his residence in Alamata Town. According to information received, armed individuals who arrived in a bajaj (three-wheeled vehicle) carried out the attack, resulting in his death.
ANU strongly condemns this heinous act. The deliberate killing of a civilian is an abhorrent and inhumane crime that violates the fundamental principles of human dignity, justice, and the longstanding moral values of the people of Tigray. Such acts of violence undermine public security, social cohesion, and the rule of law.
ANU is deeply concerned by reports and allegations circulating within the community that individuals associated with Adwa TPLF security structures may have been involvTHE KILLING OF MR. BERHE TUKUYE IN ALAMATAed in, facilitated, or failed to prevent this crime. These allegations warrant a thorough, independent, transparent, and impartial investigation. ANU calls upon the relevant authorities to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their position, affiliation, or rank, are investigated and held accountable if evidence establishes their involvement.
ANU also recognizes that many victims’ families, civil society actors, and political groups have alleged that thousands of cases of political assassinations, enforced disappearances, and other serious human rights violations were committed during periods in which TPLF exercised significant political and security authority. These allegations underscore the urgent need for independent investigations, truth-seeking mechanisms, and accountability processes that can establish the facts and provide justice to victims and their families.
Regardless of political affiliation, ideological differences, or personal beliefs, no individual should be subjected to violence or deprived of life. The murder of a civilian in his own home and community is unacceptable and must not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Agaezi National Union calls upon the relevant authorities to conduct an immediate, transparent, independent, and impartial investigation into this crime. The perpetrators, as well as any individuals who may have facilitated, planned, or supported the attack, must be swiftly identified, apprehended, and brought before a court of law.
ANU further emphasizes that any administration that fails to protect its civilian population, and any security institution that fails to uphold its responsibility to safeguard the public, must be held accountable for such failures. The primary duty of government and security authorities is to ensure the safety, security, and protection of all citizens without exception.
If the perpetrators are not brought to justice and the circumstances surrounding this crime remain unresolved, responsibility must also extend to the security authorities operating in the area, including their leadership, for failing to fulfill their obligations to protect the public and uphold the rule of law.
At this difficult time, ANU extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr. Berhe Tukuye. We stand in solidarity with all those who seek justice, accountability, and the restoration of peace and security in our communities.
The Agaezi National Union reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection of human life, the rule of law, justice, peace, and the fundamental rights of all people.
Call for Accountability
ANU believes that no organization, political party, security institution, or public official should be above the law. Where credible evidence exists linking members, officials, or structures of TPLF to political killings, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, torture, or other serious human rights violations, those responsible must be subject to independent investigation and due legal process.
ANU further calls for the establishment of an independent truth, justice, and accountability mechanism to investigate grave crimes and human rights abuses committed in Tigray and throughout Ethiopia over the past decades. Such a process should examine allegations against all actors without exception and provide victims and their families with access to truth, justice, reparations, and guarantees of non-recurrence.
Lasting peace cannot be achieved without accountability. Reconciliation requires acknowledgment of past abuses, impartial investigations, and equal application of the law to all individuals and organizations, regardless of their political influence or historical role.
ANU therefore calls upon regional, federal, and international human rights bodies to support credible investigations into unresolved cases of political violence, including the killing of Mr. Berhe Tukuye, and to ensure that any individuals found responsible—including those linked to political, military, or security structures—are held accountable under the law.
