TEWAHEDO, GE’EZ, SHARED HISTORY AND INSTITUTIONAL INTEGRITY
Official Position of the Agaezi National Union (ANU)
The Agaezi National Union (ANU) believes that the history and collective memory of the Ethiopian Tewahedo community, the Ge’ez language and literature, churches, manuscripts, archives, and cultural and religious heritage constitute important components of a shared civilization of ancient civilization state of Ethiopia and must be preserved, documented, and protected.
ANU believes that the Church must remain free from political parties, ethnic interests, personal political power, and political manipulation. The Church must not become an instrument of any political organization. It should remain an institution dedicated to spiritual life, truth, mercy, justice, human dignity, and the protection of its religious and cultural heritage.
- Political Interference in Church Affairs
There have been historical allegations and accounts concerning attempts to bring the Church in Tigray into political objectives, influence religious leaders, alter institutional relationships, or contribute to institutional divisions. Some sources have also described alleged political interference intended to influence or weaken Church institutions during periods of political struggle by the communist pagan TPLF forces.
ANU maintains that such crimes are examined through independent historical research, documentary evidence, and credible investigation. Hence, no political organization should use the Church as an instrument of political power.
Where evidence establishes political interference, those responsible should be held accountable through appropriate institutional and legal mechanisms.
- Corruption, Institutional Integrity, and the Weakening of Religious Institutions
ANU calls for careful and independent investigation of allegations concerning corruption, personal enrichment, political influence, abuse of religious authority, manipulation of spiritual institutions, or the use of Church structures for personal or political interests by the pagan communist TPLF forces.
Where corruption or institutional misconduct is established, those responsible must be subject to appropriate legal and institutional accountability.
ANU further supports transparency in Church administration, responsible financial management, protection of Church property, and mechanisms through which members of the faithful can raise legitimate concerns without intimidation or retaliation.
- Sexual Abuse, Sexual Harassment, and Conduct that Violates Human Dignity
ANU categorically rejects sexual abuse, sexual harassment, exploitation, domestic violence, humiliation of victims, concealment of abuse, or any other conduct that violates human dignity within religious communities.
Research concerning Orthodox Christian social life in Aksum and surrounding areas has examined issues including marriage, family abuse, and the pastoral treatment of such matters. These issues deserve serious attention and responsible institutional responses.
Accordingly, ANU calls for any allegation of sexual abuse, sexual harassment, exploitation, or abuse of authority to be addressed through:
* independent and impartial investigation;
* confidential mechanisms for reporting and protecting victims;
* due process and legal accountability;
* protection against retaliation;
* appropriate disciplinary measures where wrongdoing is established; and
* institutional reforms designed to prevent recurrence.
Victims must never be blamed, humiliated, silenced, or forced into silence. Those who abuse positions of authority must be held accountable when wrongdoing is established.
- Separation of Political Authority and Spiritual Authority
ANU upholds the following fundamental principle:
Politics must not control the Church, and the Church must not be used as an instrument of political power.
Priests, clergy, monks, believers, religious leaders, and Church institutions should be protected from political intimidation, coercion, abuse, corruption, and retaliation.
Religious institutions must be governed according to their religious principles, canonical traditions, institutional responsibilities, and applicable law—not according to the interests of a political party or individual political leader.
- The Church Is a Community of Faith, Not the Property of a Political Party
ANU believes that the Church must not become the possession or political instrument of any single party, ethnic group, region, faction, or individual leader.
Protecting Tewahedo requires more than political influence. It requires:
* canonical and institutional integrity;
* spiritual responsibility;
* truth and transparency;
* justice;
* compassion;
* accountability;
* protection of religious freedom; and
* respect for the dignity of every believer.
ANU therefore rejects the politicization of religious identity as a means of consolidating political power by TPLF.
- Ge’ez Language and Cultural Heritage
ANU calls for the protection of the Ge’ez language, manuscripts, books, archives, crosses, religious paintings, churches, monasteries, historical sites, and other cultural and religious heritage as part of a shared historical legacy.
Heritage that has been lost, looted, destroyed, or displaced should be:
- properly documented;
- independently investigated;
- authenticated;
- legally recovered or returned where appropriate;
- preserved in secure archives; and
- restored whenever technically and historically possible.
ANU supports the creation of comprehensive digital archives for Ge’ez manuscripts and historical records so that irreplaceable knowledge is protected for future generations.
- From Victimhood to Justice
ANU believes that historical suffering must not be used to perpetuate political hatred or permanent division. Historical suffering should instead become a foundation for truth, justice, accountability, reconciliation, and institutional renewal.
The principle is:
Victimhood → Truth → Investigation → Accountability → Justice → Reconciliation → Institutional Reform
ANU recognizes the importance of remembering victims and preserving historical memory. At the same time, historical memory should not become a permanent instrument of political domination or hostility against other communities.
A people should remember its suffering, but it should not be ruled by its suffering. History should be honored, but history must never become an instrument of hatred.
- ANU’s Fundamental Message
ANU believes that protecting the Tewahedo community, the Ge’ez language, literature, history, and heritage must coexist with respect for the rights, dignity, and cultural traditions of other religious, linguistic, and ethnic communities.
The preservation of shared heritage should serve reconciliation and historical understanding—not exclusion or domination.
ANU therefore affirms the following principles:
Shared Heritage + Equal Citizenship + Human Dignity + Institutional Independence + Rule of Law + Accountability
These principles provide a pathway from historical suffering and political division toward truth, justice, reconciliation, institutional renewal, and a shared future.
AGAEZI NATIONAL UNION (ANU)
OFFICIAL POSITION
* d’enquêtes indépendantes et impartiales ;
* de mécanismes confidentiels permettant de signaler les abus et de protéger les victimes ;
* du respect des procédures légales et du principe de responsabilité ;
* de mesures de protection contre les représailles ;
* de sanctions disciplinaires appropriées lorsque les faits sont établis ; et
* de réformes institutionnelles destinées à prévenir la répétition de tels actes.
* l’intégrité canonique et institutionnelle ;
* la responsabilité spirituelle ;
* la vérité et la transparence ;
* la justice ;
* la compassion ;
* la responsabilité institutionnelle ;
* la protection de la liberté religieuse ; et
* le respect de la dignité de chaque croyant.
- correctement documentés ;
- soumis à une enquête indépendante ;
- authentifiés ;
- récupérés ou restitués légalement lorsque cela est approprié ;
