Who is Gidey Zeratsion?

Do you know him???

Gidey Zeratsion, the loyal servant who sold Tigray and its people for 51 years.

What is the story?

Gidey Zeratsion was born in the Tigray Region, grew up there, and received his education there.

Presenting himself as a Tigrayan Ethiopian, Gidey joined the armed struggle 51 years ago under the banner of the national question in order to overthrow the oppressive rulers of the time. In 1967 E.C. (1974/75 G.C.), he went to the deserts of Tigray and eventually rose to the position of Vice Chairman of the TPLF (Hizbawi Woyane Tigray).

However, although Gidey entered the struggle as a people’s fighter, this man had, through deception, concealed from us that he was actually Eritrean. From the very beginning, when he entered the armed struggle, a number of TPLF fighters suspected that he was a strategic spy and agent of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF/Shaebia). Many of us who are still alive today can testify to this. At the time, however, we could only express our suspicions as rumors.

Beginning in 1972 E.C., we suspected that Gidey Zeratsion, Sebhat Nega, and Aregawi Berhe were all agents of Shaebia because of the actions they were taking. At that time, Gidey Zeratsion and Sebhat Nega were the principal agents serving Shaebia. Aregawi Berhe, because he admired Shaebia’s political strategy and ideology, shared common views and actions with those two agents.

From 1972 E.C. onward, Shaebia itself suffered military and political defeats. It was defeated by the Derg and was driven out of almost all Eritrea. It was pushed back to a small area near the Sudanese border and came close to complete destruction.

However, Shaebia was very clever in pursuing its own interests. It convinced the three agents—especially Gidey Zeratsion, Sebhat Nega, and Aregawi Berhe—that large numbers of Tigrayan youth were joining the armed struggle to fight the fascist Derg regime. Through these three agents, Shaebia had accurate information about the increasing flow of young people joining the struggle.

Once this was confirmed, Shaebia needed to find trusted individuals or groups within the TPLF Central Committee who could persuade the leadership. It needed people who would present themselves as working for the benefit of the people of Tigray and the youth while actually promoting Shaebia’s interests.

Since Shaebia had already found the three people capable of fulfilling this objective, it gave them instructions. These loyal servants then persuaded most members of the Central Committee, arguing:

“If the Derg destroys Shaebia, it will eventually destroy us as well. Therefore, in order to save ourselves, we must save Shaebia from destruction. We should send large numbers of young fighters, train them—or have them trained there—arm them under Shaebia, and rescue Shaebia from being wiped out.”

Following this decision, 13,430 newly recruited young fighters were sent to Eritrea in successive waves.

The mission of Sebhat Nega, Gidey Zeratsion, and Aregawi Berhe achieved its first success.

Shaebia regained its breath.

Shaebia secured its defensive positions.

Those Tigrayan youths who entered Sahel to save Shaebia because of Gidey’s collaboration remained there from Megabit 1972 E.C. until Tahsas 1974 E.C., a period of 22 months.

During those 22 months, they lived in Shaebia’s foxhole fortifications, endured what the author describes as Shaebia’s slave-like rule, and served as part of Shaebia’s army. They were integrated into its military structure, guarded its positions, fought its battles, were wounded, died, suffered oppression, and endured harsh living conditions.

As their suffering increased, serious disputes arose because questions raised by the fighters received no satisfactory answers from either the TPLF or Shaebia.

At that time, whenever conflicts arose, those who came from Tigray or Sudan to resolve them were the same people who are today supporters of Shaebia and of Debretsion Gebremichael’s group—namely the collaborators Gidey Zeratsion and Sebhat Nega.

The solutions they brought always favored Shaebia and failed to answer the legitimate questions raised by our army. Their responses were biased in favor of Shaebia.

In 1974 E.C., during the months of Tir and Yekatit, the Derg announced at an international conference in Asmara the Red Star Campaign, whose objective was to eliminate Shaebia completely.

After spending 22 months guarding Shaebia’s fortifications, the force that returned had been drastically reduced because many had been killed or wounded.

As the Derg prepared for the campaign, Shaebia realized it could not resist the offensive alone. Therefore, it summoned Aregawi Berhe and Gidey Zeratsion to Sahel.

The purpose of the meeting was to explain that unless the veteran TPLF army entered the fighting, Shaebia would be destroyed. They therefore requested that the TPLF send its forces to participate.

The collaborators knew they first had to convince the entire leadership.

Shaebia’s Political Bureau therefore went to Tigray and persuaded Sebhat Nega, the chairman of the TPLF.

Sebhat Nega, together with Gidey Zeratsion and Aregawi Berhe, was then assigned to convince both the Executive Committee and the Central Committee.

Because of the authority they held within the organization, Gidey Zeratsion and Sebhat Nega were particularly successful in persuading people at every level.

Those who opposed their proposal included:

  • Tewolde Wolde Mariam (“Ewur”)
  • General Tsadkan
  • Ato Gebru Asrat
  • General Hayelom

Through the collaboration of Sebhat Nega, Gidey Zeratsion, and Aregawi Berhe, three brigades were sent.

Each brigade consisted of approximately 1,500 fighters, totaling 4,500.

In addition, 4,300 newly trained fighters were sent, bringing the total to 8,800 troops.

The forces, commanded by officers including General Samora Yenus, Arkebe Equbay, and General Abebe Teklehaimanot, entered the Red Star Campaign and succeeded in repelling it.

Later, to replace those who had been wounded, another 6,000 newly trained young fighters from Tigray were dispatched in two additional waves.

At that time, the principal liaison and collaborator, Gidey Zeratsion, was constantly with Isaias.

Whenever disputes arose between the two armies, Sebhat Nega would also travel there.

The two of them handled almost every important matter.

Because Sebhat Nega was able to silence TPLF fighters who raised questions, Shaebia gave him the nickname “Aboy Sewra.”

The name “Aboy Sebhat” was likewise bestowed upon him by Shaebia.

The late Ato Seyoum Mesfin, may his soul rest in peace, together with Jamaica, were among those who accompanied them.

According to the author, Gidey Zeratsion, Sebhat Nega, and Aregawi Berhe did not want TPLF fighters to raise serious questions regarding Shaebia because they wished to carry out Shaebia’s directives without opposition.

The author states that people who were present at the time—including the individual known as Qegni, as well as Dr. Mehari and General Yohannes Gebremeskel—could testify to these events as neutral witnesses.

After the Red Star Campaign, information emerged that another offensive, known as the Silent Infiltration Campaign, was being prepared.

Once again, Shaebia contacted its collaborator Gidey Zeratsion in Sudan.

After consultations with Sebhat Nega and Aregawi Berhe, and after the fighting had begun and Shaebia had started to collapse, two additional brigades, numbering 3,000 fighters, together with another 3,000 newly trained combatants, were dispatched.

These forces reached Barka, Asmat, and Halhal, where they disrupted numerous military operations.

Later, another 3,500 fighters were sent.

According to the author, most of those who participated in the Silent Infiltration Campaign lost their lives, although the invasion itself was eventually repelled.

The commanders leading that campaign included:

  • Abebe Teklehaimanot (“Jebe”)
  • Awalom Woldu
  • Brigade commanders Medhin
  • Simret Wedi Mido
  • and others.

The main purpose of this article is to answer the question:

Who is Gidey Zeratsion?

Was he fighting as a Tigrayan?

Or was he actually serving Shaebia while presenting himself as a Tigrayan?

The author says this question deserves an answer.

Under the influence of Sebhat, Gidey, and Aregawi, three brigades—each consisting of about 1,500 fighters (a total of 4,500)—were deployed. In addition, 4,300 newly trained fighters joined them, bringing the total to 8,800. These forces, commanded by General Samora Yenus (Arkebe Equbay) and General Abebe Teklehaimanot, participated in the Red Star Campaign and succeeded in repelling it.

To replace the wounded and those lost in battle, another 6,000 young fighters who had completed training in Tigray were sent to the war in two additional waves.

At that time, the principal liaison and alleged intermediary, Gidey Zeratsion, was said to be inseparable from Isaias. Whenever conflict arose between the two armies, Sebhat would also travel there. According to the author, the two of them handled everything, and because Sebhat Nega was able to silence any TPLF fighters who raised questions, Shaebia reportedly gave him the nickname “Aboy Sewra.” The name “Aboy Sebhat” was also reportedly given to him by Shaebia.

The late Ato Seyoum Mesfin (“Jamaica”), may his soul rest in peace, and his companions were witnesses to these events.

According to the author, Gidey, Sebhat Nega, and Aregawi Berhe did not want TPLF fighters to raise serious questions regarding Shaebia’s policies, as they were committed to implementing Shaebia’s directives. The author adds that people such as the individual known as “Qegnu,” the current Dr. Mehari, and General Yohannes Gebremeskel could testify independently about these matters.

Later, after the Red Star Campaign, reports emerged that the Derg was preparing another offensive known as the “Selahta Invasion.”

The author claims that Shaebia again contacted its alleged ally Gidey Zeratsion in Sudan. After meetings with Sebhat and Aregawi Berhe, and as fighting resumed while Shaebia was reportedly beginning to collapse, two additional brigades (3,000 men), together with another 3,000 newly trained fighters, were dispatched to Barka, Asmat, and Halhal, where they reportedly helped repel several attacks.

Later, another 3,500 fighters were sent.

The author states that most of the forces who participated in the Selahta campaign were killed, although the invasion itself was ultimately repelled.

Among those who reportedly commanded that campaign were:

  • Abebe Teklehaimanot (“Jebe”)
  • Awalom Woldu
  • Brigade commanders Medhin and Simret Wedi Mido
  • and others.

The main purpose of this article, according to the author, is to answer the question:

Who is Gidey Zeratsion?

Was he fighting as a Tigrayan, or was he fighting on behalf of Shaebia?

The author argues that after Gidey left the TPLF claiming he had ideological differences with the organization, this did not represent a new disagreement. Rather, the author alleges that since 1967 E.C., Gidey had never truly been a TPLF member and remained a Shaebia agent until his departure.

The author offers the following as evidence:

  1. After leaving the TPLF, Gidey immediately aligned himself with Shaebia.
  2. He later worked with Kinijit, Arbegnoch, DMHIT, Ginbot 7, and others, allegedly seeking to destabilize Ethiopia and establish a government controlled by Shaebia.
  3. During the Prosperity Party era, when Shaebia was accused of committing genocide against the people of Tigray, the author claims that Gidey publicly approved of Shaebia’s invasion of Tigray and even justified the killing of civilians by arguing that the TPLF and the people of Tigray were “two sides of the same coin.” The author characterizes this as a “devilish position.”
  4. More recently, the author claims that Gidey advocated cooperation between Shaebia, Debretsion’s group, Fano, and other allied groups in order to defeat the Prosperity Party.

The author concludes that from 1967 E.C. until the present—a period of 51 years—Gidey Zeratsion has allegedly remained a loyal Shaebia agent who has continually sacrificed the people and youth of Tigray. According to the author, even now Gidey presents himself as a friend while attempting to pit Ethiopia’s political forces against one another, with the aim of once again establishing a system in which the TPLF would serve under Shaebia’s influence.

The author further argues that Gidey’s ability to conceal his Eritrean identity while operating within Ethiopian politics for 51 years demonstrates how dangerous he allegedly is.

Finally, the author distinguishes Aregawi Berhe from Gidey and Sebhat, stating that although Aregawi’s actions may have benefited Shaebia, he should not be regarded as a traitor in the same way the author considers Gidey and Sebhat to be.

The article concludes with the warning:

“Beware of Gidey!”

“More about Gidey will follow.”
