ANU Press Release
ANU Calls for Peace, Accountability, and Full Implementation of the Pretoria Agreement Following U.S. Visa Restrictions Announcement
June 18, 2026
The Agaezi National Union (ANU) has taken note of the 17th June 2026 announcement by the United States of American Government regarding targeted visa restrictions against individuals accused of undermining peace and stability in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, specifically hardline members of the TPLF & their immediate family members.
ANU remains deeply concerned by the rising tensions in northern Ethiopia and the increasing risk of renewed armed confrontation. The triangular dirty political war , and devastating conflict of 2020–2022 inflicted immense human suffering, destroyed livelihoods, displaced millions, and left lasting social, economic, and psychological scars across communities throughout Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. The region cannot afford another cycle of war.
ANU believes that sustainable peace cannot be secured through military confrontation, political exclusion, or mutual recrimination. Lasting stability requires a genuine commitment by all parties to dialogue, restraint, accountability, and the faithful implementation of existing agreements.
We reiterate our support for:
- The full implementation of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.
- The protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
- The peaceful resolution of political disputes through dialogue and constitutional processes.
- The return and rehabilitation of internally displaced persons and affected communities.
- Accountability for violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.
- Inclusive political engagement that prioritizes the interests of citizens over factional interests.
- Ensuring and securing Accountability, Justice, and fair reprisal for all Habesha Ethiopians.
ANU further believes that international partners have an important role to play in encouraging peace, preventing escalation, and supporting institutions that advance reconciliation and sustainable development. However, durable solutions must ultimately emerge from the collective efforts of Ethiopians and the peoples of the Horn of Africa themselves.
The current moment should serve as a warning to all political actors. The people of Ethiopia have paid an extraordinary price for conflict. The future must not be held hostage by political polarization, historical grievances, or short-term power struggles.
ANU’s vision remains unchanged: a Horn of Africa transformed from fear to confidence, from dependency to self-reliance, from crisis-centered politics to development-centered governance, and from perpetual conflict to peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity.
We call upon all stakeholders to exercise maximum restraint, recommit themselves to peace, and place the wellbeing of the people above political calculations.
Agaezi National Union (ANU)
Building a future beyond conflict, division, and dependency.
